1. The
Minutes of the meeting of March 31 and April 1, 2006 were approved.
- Motion to approve: Jeff Krause; second Kathleen Maurer Smith
2. President’s
Report: (Stephen Goldberg)
- The
New York State Conference is the largest conference of AAUP. Therefore
the issues of how can the conference be useful and relevant to the
members. How can better service be generated.
- In
the case of the Franklin Institute the court ruled against the
faculty member seeking Emeritus status.
- Two
calls were received on problems at Ithaca College and Queensbury
Community College.
3. Report
Vice-President: (Kathleen Maurer Smith submitted a written report)
- There
are 4476 AAUP members at 127 individual institutions in the
public and independent sectors throughout New York State.
- The
Committee searching for an Executive Director has identified two
candidates, one of whom will be interviewed at this meeting;
- There
was a discussion of the state of the membership department at the
national office.
4. Report
of the Treasurer (Patrick Cihon written report submitted
- The
budget was presented and discussed
- Motion:
To approve the budget
- Motion
(Gellman) to amend the budget by taking $200 from each committee’s
budget and transfer that to web page development
- Motion
to approve the amended budget – passed unanimously
- The
treasurer has received a request for reimbursement for expenses
accrued in 1999.
- Motion:
To require that members submit expenses within six months of accrual.(Gellman,
second: Kaplan)
- Motion
passed 18-1
- Motion:
To reject payment for 1999 expenses (Gray, second: Linton)
- Motion
defeated 5-9
5. Report
of the Standing Committees:
a) Report
of Committee “A” ( Irwin Yellowitz):
- Case
at the Fashion Institute worked its way through court where the decision
went in favor of the Fashion Institute.
- One
continuing case at Ithaca College where a tenured faculty member
who was warned that he might be dismissed has not been dismissed
so far.(got here 2/9/07
- LeMoyne
College: a faculty member was removed as advisor to the college
newspaper even though the faculty member had the support of the
student editors. No violation of academic freedom is alleged but
there is a violation of AAUP policy here.
- St.
Bonaventure University: a faculty member who allegedly insulted
an Anglican priest was accused of harassment but was cleared by
an administration investigation. The priest appealed the decision
and a faculty committee agreed that there was harassment and the
faculty member was put on probation. Committee A sent a letter
to the University pointing out that the letter of probation violated
AAUP Redbook Policy.
- Report

- John
Schadel (Medaille) expressed his appreciation to the NY conference
for its support of the faculty at Medaille

of Committee on Chapters, Members, and Dues: (Kathleen Maurer Smith) – see

c) Report
of the Committee on Contingent Faculty and the Profession
- David
Linton reported that the adjunct faculty at Marymount Manhattan obtained
approval to collective bargain and are now in the process of negotiating
the first contract.
- Syracuse
University adjuncts were organized by NYSUT and are negotiating.
- Arnold
Cantor, the former chair of this committee has retired. A motion
of appreciation for his work will be drafted by Irwin Yellowitz.
- Stephen
Goldberg suggested that it might be a good idea to appoint an adjunct
faculty member as chair of this committee.
d) Report
of the Committee on Government Relations: (Pat Bentley)
- Report
postponed until Saturday.
e) Report
of the Committee on College and University Governance:

on the Status of Women in the Academic Profession (Patricia Bentley) Report
postponed until Saturday.
g) Report
on the Committee on Retirement: (Martin Kaplan)

- Compensation
for the position of Executive Director was discussed and it was
agreed that the compensation would stay at $28,000 but not to exceed
$30,000

of the Independent Council – no report

- The
National Office has hired a new staff member to head up the Membership
Department.
- The
new database for membership at the National Office is not yet functional.
- Faculty
at the University of the Virgin Islands is in the process of organizing.
- Items
for the June 2007 meeting:
- Constitutional
changes in the elections procedures. Chapter representatives must
be elected by the chapter by secret ballot
- CBC
Delegates vote as elected representatives.
- Dues
will increase by $5.00
e) Report
of the Regional Councils. There
was no report.
8. NY
Academe
–(Jeff Krause)
- NY
Academe is published quarterly in an eight (8) page tabloid format.
- The
goal is to publish a paper which provides information about AAYP
activity in NY State; information
about AAUP national activities and stories on trends in higher education.
- In
the next issue, AAUP President, Nelson will write an article on the
challenges of organizing graduate assistants at private institutions.
- Updates
from individuals and individual campuses are welcome since the
paper strives to become a clearinghouse for information about higher
education in NY State
Next Meeting: April 13 & 14 at a place to be determined.
