General Secretary Bowen to Speak at Our Fall Meeting

The UUP/AAUP's SUNY-Geneseo Chapter will host the 2004 Fall Meeting of the New York State Conference at its Genesee Valley campus on October 15-16. The Meeting will begin on Friday at 3:00 p.m. when the business part of the Meeting will take place. Among the items of concern may be the lifting of the AAUP censures of SUNY and St. Bonaventure; the Medaille situation; and our relationship with NYSUT. At 4:15 p.m. Roger Bowen, the new General Secretary of the AAUP, will speak on the topic, "Academic Crimes: A Review of Academic Freedom and Current Campus Speech Issues " A reception and buffet dinner will follow, from 5:30 p.m. on.

On Saturday morning, following a continental breakfast at 8:45 a.m., there will be (at 9:30 a.m.) some Reports from the Field and Discussion:

The Meeting will adjourn at noon and will be followed by a lunch.

All the events are scheduled to take place at Campus House on Main Street in Geneseo. You can find below directions for how to get to the Geneseo campus. We can coordinate travel arrangements as we approach the date for the Meeting.

A block of rooms has been reserved at Days Inn Geneseo, 4242 Lakeville Road, RL20 A, Geneseo, NY 14454. (585) 243-0500. This motel is approximately a mile from the campus. Please let the Executive Director know immediately whether you wish her to place your name on the room list. A special rate of $59.00 a night has been negotiated not only for members of the Executive Committee, but also for all other AAUP members.

How to Get to the Fall Meeting in Geneseo

Here are the various travel options taken from the Geneseo website. For additional information, you may navigate yourself at: http://www.geneseo.edu.

If you are planning to drive:

From the west: Take the New York State Thruway to Batavia Exit 48; Route 63 South to Geneseo; bear left at fork after traffic light (toward 20A); turn left at stop sign, onto 20A; first left at stop light onto Main Street (Route 39); see continued directions below. From the south: Take Route 390 North to Exit 7; Route 63/39 North (approximately 3 miles); turn left at the second traffic light onto Main Street (Route 39); see continued directions below. From the north or east: Take the New York State Thruway to Rochester Exit 46; Route 390 South to Geneseo Exit 8; Route 20A West (approximately five miles); turn right at the third traffic light onto Main Street (Route 39); see continued directions below. Continued Directions: Take the first left off Main Street onto Park Street; parking is at the visitors' circle on the right. You will find detailed set of directions at MapQuest.

Air Travel

You may make air travel plans by scheduling a flight to the Greater Rochester International Airport, which is approximately 30 minutes from the Geneseo campus. The following airlines are served: Air Tran, American, Continental, Delta, Jet Blue, Northwest, United and US Air. Transportation from the airport to Geneseo can be arranged through Trailways Bus Lines or a rental car agent at the airport. For Rochester airport information, please call (585) 464-6001.

Train Travel

Amtrak operates daily trains to Rochester. You may arrange transportation from Rochester to Geneseo through Empire Trailways; the Amtrak station in Rochester is located six blocks from the bus station; downtown taxicabs are available throughout the city of Rochester for your convenience. Bus Travel

You can reach Geneseo by bus with the Trailways Bus Lines. For schedule information and ticket costs for Trailways call (800) 295-5555. From Albany and points east and from Cleveland and points west and southwest, all bus lines travel to Rochester where, if necessary, you can transfer to Empire Trailways. The 50-minute bus trip from Rochester to Geneseo leaves at 8:35 am (daily), and also 4:15 pm on Friday, and 1:30 pm on Sunday. From New York's Southern Tier and points south and southeast, bus lines would travel to Elmira where you can transfer to Empire Trailways. Daily trips on Trailways leave Elmira at 4:00 pm and arrive in Geneseo at 6:30 pm. Please contact Trailways for any changes to this schedule. Once you arrive in the village of Geneseo, the campus is within walking distance from the bus stop, down the hill from Main Street.
