New York State Conference, AAUP

Pursuant to a voluntary settlement agreement signed on January 18, 2011, new nominations and a new election will be conducted, under the supervision of the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Labor-Management Standards (OLMS), for the two at-large members of the Executive Council of the New York State Conference (NYSC), AAUP, elected on April 17, 2010. The term of office for the two at-large positions will be for the remainder of the unexpired term, ending at the NYSC Spring Conference and Election in 2012.

In accordance with the NYSC constitution and bylaws, any active member of the AAUP in New York State whose membership is in good standing as of the opening of nominations and who has been a member of the NYSC for at least one year is eligible to stand for election to a position on the NYSC Executive Council. All NYSC members in good standing will be allowed to nominate candidates for office. Those interested in being nominated for these positions must obtain signatures from at least three (3) NYSC members in good standing at the time of nomination. All three signatures may be from the same chapter.

The following procedures must be used to nominate a candidate for office:

• Potential candidates may email members to request nomination. Members who wish to nominate the individual should reply to the email request, including their name, email contact information, and institutional affiliation. Potential candidates should copy and paste three of the email replies received from members into one email and forward such to Election Committee Chair Frank Higman ( fhigman@aol.com ) AND Election Supervisor Marla Tumiel ( tumiel.marla@dol.gov ) by the nominations deadline.
• Potential candidates may obtain nominations by regular mail, mailing their three member nominations (with all of the aforementioned information) to Election Committee Chair Frank Higman, 4031 Lewiston Road, Niagara Falls, NY 14305, AND Election Supervisor Marla Tumiel at 130 S. Elmwood Avenue, Ste. 510, Buffalo, NY 14202, by the nominations deadline.
• Potential candidates should also submit their biographical information and election statement (500 word max.) to the Election Committee Chair and Election Supervisor by the same nominations deadline.

NOMINATIONS WILL CLOSE ON MARCH 14, 2011, AT 5:00 P.M.

Ballots will be mailed out on March 25, 2011. If you do not receive a ballot package please contact the Election Chair or Election Supervisor to request one.

The deadline to return voted ballots will be Monday, April 18, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. Detailed voting instructions will be provided in the ballot packages to be mailed to members on March 25, 2011.

Candidates who need assistance reaching NYSC members to obtain the required signatures for nomination should contact Election Supervisor Tumiel for access to a list of members.

Nominations Notice Distribution

* For all members with both an email address and a home address, we will email this nominations notice and the following language:

Ballots will be mailed to home addresses on March 25, 2011. Receipt of this email is confirmation that the National AAUP has a home address on file for your membership.

* For all members with an email address but no home address, we will email this nominations notice and the following language:

Ballots will be mailed to home addresses on March 25, 2011. The national AAUP does not have a home address on file for your membership. You must contact the National AAUP prior to March 25, 2011, via email – membership@aaup.org – and provide your home address. Ballot packages cannot be mailed to work addresses.

* For all members with no email address, the NYSC will mail a postcard with the nominations notice and the following language:

If you received this postcard at your work address you must contact the National AAUP prior to March 25, 2011, via email – membership@aaup.org – and provide your home address. Ballot packages cannot be mailed to work addresses.

*Additionally, if you wish to receive future email communications from the NYSC and do not currently have an email address on file with AAUP, please provide one to AAUP via email – membership@aaup.org .

All protests to the supervised election must be received by the OLMS Election Supervisor no later than 10 days after the election.
